Closer spacing, deeper runs and a larger drained area require more excavation, pipe, aggregate and time.
There is no dependable flat rate for draining a field. Pipe spacing, depth, ground, access, stone, outfalls and reinstatement can all change the price. This guide gives a published benchmark and explains what turns that benchmark into a realistic quote.

AHDB's national guidance, based on 2024 prices, gives typical field-drainage costs of £2,500–£3,500 per hectare with permeable backfill and £1,400–£2,000 per hectare without it.
These are historic industry benchmarks, not 2026 prices or a Wright's Contractors quotation. They are useful for early budgeting, but a current North Yorkshire price needs a site visit and a workable drainage specification.

Two fields of the same size can need very different schemes. These are the main factors we assess before giving a fixed quotation.
Closer spacing, deeper runs and a larger drained area require more excavation, pipe, aggregate and time.
Heavy, wet, stony or unstable ground changes how quickly trenches can be formed and whether additional protection or backfill is needed.
A drainage system needs a suitable place to discharge. Locating, clearing or creating an outfall can materially change the scope.
The amount of clean stone and whether geotextile is needed affect both performance and material cost.
Gate widths, slopes, soft access routes and the distance between the work and material deliveries all affect the programme.
A blocked outlet or damaged section can be cheaper to correct than installing a complete new field-drainage system.
A wet patch does not automatically mean the whole field needs a new drainage system. Older drains may still work away from a damaged pipe, silted ditch, blocked outlet or later development that interrupted the original run.
We start by looking for the cause. Targeted repairs, outlet work, an interceptor drain or a reinforced gateway can be more sensible than replacing every drain across the field.

Ground and access vary considerably across North Yorkshire. A paddock beside a good ditch, a low field with no obvious outfall and a working yard with constant livestock traffic need different solutions even when their wet area looks similar.

AHDB recommends an environmental assessment before installing or maintaining field drainage. Drains can reduce surface run-off and erosion, but they can also move nutrient-rich water and sediment quickly if the scheme and outfall are poorly planned.
