The civils package on a renewable energy site
Solar farms, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and grid connection projects need the same fundamentals as any commercial scheme: stable access, level compounds, robust foundations, well-managed drainage and properly trenched cable runs. The plant, the techniques and the disciplines are exactly what we use every day on warehouse and industrial developments — applied to a different end use.
On a solar farm we can deliver:
- Site clearance and bulk earthworks
- Stoned access tracks for construction and ongoing O&M traffic
- Reinforced concrete pads and ducting for inverters, transformers and switchgear
- Cable trenching between arrays and the grid connection point
- Substation compound construction including transformer bases
- Perimeter fencing, gated access and CCTV column bases
- Site drainage, swales and silt management
- Reinstatement and biodiversity works on completion
On a BESS site we can deliver levelled and surfaced compounds, concrete plinths for battery containers, containment bunding for fire and spill protection, firebreak zones, security fencing and the substation civil works for grid connection.
We don't install panels, mounting systems, electrical equipment or batteries — that's specialist work for the EPC contractor. We do everything that goes underneath, around and between.
Honest about where we are
We won't pretend we've got a long list of completed solar farms behind us — we haven't. What we do have is a 10-strong team, our own plant fleet, and years of experience delivering the exact disciplines a renewable site needs: earthworks, foundations, drainage, trenching, access tracks, fencing and compounds.
For an EPC contractor or developer working in Yorkshire, that's a useful capability to have available locally. We're well-placed to take on a balance-of-plant package, work alongside your existing electrical contractor, or handle a discrete scope like access tracks and trenching while your specialist teams focus on the grid connection.
If you're a developer looking for a regional civils partner who can mobilise quickly and won't disappear off to a more profitable job halfway through, we're a conversation worth having.
Where we work
Yorkshire has a fast-growing pipeline of solar and battery projects, including major schemes in the East Riding, the Vale of York and the Doncaster–Selby belt. From our Knaresborough base we cover the whole region comfortably — Harrogate, York, Northallerton, Thirsk, Ripon, Skipton, and across into the Tees Valley.
What we'll need from you
For a sensible quote we'll want to see:
- Site location and access arrangements
- Topographical survey and ground investigation report (if available)
- Proposed layout drawings and civil scope
- Programme dates and key milestones (panel delivery, energisation target)
- Any planning conditions affecting site works (BNG, drainage, ecology, hours of work)
Send what you have and we'll come back with questions and a costed proposal. If you're at an earlier stage and just want to know whether we can resource the job, pick up the phone — happy to talk it through.
