How much does fencing cost per metre?
There is no single installed fencing rate that fits a private garden, a paddock and an industrial perimeter. Wright's Contractors does not publish a standard price per metre: we inspect the site and quote for the agreed materials, access and ground conditions.
A metre rate is useful only when its scope is clear. A supply-only panel price is not an installed boundary price. A long, accessible run can also have a different unit cost from a short replacement that needs old concrete posts removed and materials carried through a narrow garden.
Ask whether the quoted length follows the actual fence line, how corners are treated, and whether gates are measured separately. Our fencing installation service covers garden, rural and commercial boundaries across North Yorkshire.
What changes an installed fencing quote?
- Fence type and height: closeboard timber, stock netting, post and rail, palisade and mesh systems need different components and installation methods.
- Posts and foundations: timber, concrete and steel posts are not interchangeable specifications. Ground conditions and the agreed system affect installation.
- Access: narrow passages, slopes, delivery distances and soft ground can change the labour and machinery required.
- Existing fencing: taking out posts, concrete, wire and vegetation is separate work unless it is expressly included.
- Corners and level changes: short returns, steps, end posts and changes in direction add components beyond a straight run.
- Gates: gate leaves, supporting posts, hinges, catches and surrounding ground preparation should be priced explicitly.
For rural work, compare the full agricultural fencing specification, including netting, strands, strainers and gate openings. For a commercial boundary, the security fencing specification should also reflect the site's access and security requirements.
A practical way to compare totals
For a quotation that separates these items, the total can be understood as: fence length × agreed installed rate, plus gates, removal and any separately priced groundworks, with VAT where applicable. Some contractors use a single fixed project total instead. In either case, check that the same work has been included and nothing has been counted twice.
Ask both contractors to price the same height, material, post type, treatment or finish, gate openings and disposal requirements. A lower headline rate may omit work you will still need to pay for.
What should a fencing quotation include?
- The fence line, approximate length and agreed height.
- Fence materials, post specification and any gravel boards or wire details.
- Gate quantity, opening sizes and hardware.
- Removal, disposal and vegetation clearance included in the job.
- Installation method and any site-specific ground preparation.
- Access arrangements, reinstatement expectations, exclusions and VAT treatment.
For site hoarding, also establish who provides the required design, whether alterations during the build are included, and who removes the installation at the end.
What to send us before a survey
Send your postcode, photographs of the full boundary and its access route, approximate length, intended fence use and gate requirements. Tell us if the work must fit school dates, livestock movements or ongoing site operations.
You do not need a finished specification before contacting us. We can discuss options and confirm the details at a site visit. See our York fencing projects and Ripon fencing work, or request a fencing quotation.
