Start with what the boundary needs to do
A depot, school and business park may all need a secure perimeter, but their operating needs differ. Vehicle access, pedestrian routes, appearance, visibility and neighbouring uses should be discussed before selecting a system.
Our commercial and security fencing service includes palisade, welded mesh and perimeter gates. We install to an agreed specification rather than treating either fence type as a complete security solution on its own.
What is palisade fencing?
Palisade uses upright steel pales fixed to horizontal rails between posts. Profile, spacing, finish and top treatment form part of the selected specification. It can suit yards, depots and industrial boundaries where an open steel perimeter is appropriate.
Before choosing it, consider how the line will follow slopes and corners, how openings will be formed, and whether the selected appearance is suitable for the location. Confirm the exact components on the quotation rather than relying on the word “palisade” alone.
What is mesh fencing?
Welded mesh systems use panels fixed to posts. V-mesh and closely spaced mesh systems such as 358 have different layouts and specifications; they should not be treated as equivalent simply because both are mesh.
Mesh may suit boundaries where visibility and a consistent panel appearance are important. For school fencing, the school should agree the boundary layout, gate arrangements and interface with pupil access. Product choice follows those requirements.
How should you compare the options?
- Site use: identify who uses each side of the fence and where vehicles or pedestrians enter.
- Visibility: assess sight lines at gates, corners and neighbouring paths using the actual proposed layout.
- Height and layout: agree the line, level changes, corners and any interfaces with buildings or existing fences.
- Complete system specification: compare the panels or pales, posts, fixings, finish and installation details together.
- Maintenance: consider access for inspection and replacement components, not just the initial finish.
- Security requirements: where a client requires a particular tested rating or system, confirm that exact requirement and compatible components before ordering.
Neither a generic mesh label nor a palisade appearance guarantees a particular security performance. Gates, fixings, foundations and gaps at adjoining structures all matter to the completed perimeter.
Gates and groundworks need equal attention
A fence quotation should show how perimeter gates connect to the boundary. Confirm clear opening widths, opening direction, support posts and the ground levels through the opening. Separate pedestrian access may be needed rather than routing everyone through a vehicle gate.
For replacement boundaries, establish whether the existing supports can be used or need removal. Soft ground, buried obstructions and changes in level can affect the installation method. We can include related groundworks in the agreed scope.
Temporary separation during installation
An operating yard or school may need its boundary kept closed while work progresses. Agree the sequence, working areas and any temporary fencing or hoarding before the permanent installation starts.
Send us a plan or boundary photographs, the intended use, gate requirements and any client specification. We can then inspect access and ground conditions and explain the installation options in a site-specific quotation.
